The “Start of the Stop®” was simple enough.
Our founder was in a meeting with the management team of a company where he was helping review their sales organization. This meeting was being held to review the pricing structure of the company’s offerings. The management team presented its current pricing matrix. It had 22 different pricing levels. Our founder looked at it and said to the team, “This is stupid.”
There was a moment of silence and then some nervous laughter. He then asked why they did it this way. The typical reasons then came forth. “It happened over time.” “We’ve always done it this way.” “That’s what management wanted.”
He listened to what everyone on the team had to say and then said, “Well, this makes no sense so let’s change it.” Today that company has three pricing tiers and now the customers understand the pricing, and the people in the company understand how to price their offerings. The sales process is more efficient as pricing takes less time and it is easier to communicate to its prospects taking even more friction out of its sales process. “Stop the Stupid®” was born.
Our founder realized that this same type of conversation was happening in thousands of conference rooms at companies all over the world.
Go into any company and ask any person there if their company does dumb things. About 100 times out of 100, the person will roll their eyes and say something like “Oh, do we!” and then proceed to tell you their top stories about the dumb things they do.
It was clear to our founder that if people and companies were able to easily and quickly identify and then stop doing all the stupid stuff we all do, people would be happier and have less stress, and the companies they worked for would improve their performance measurably and be better places to work. Not a bad deal.
